Category: News |

What Private Equity Investment Success Looks Like

We have all heard of the numerous IPO successes of privately funded ventures like Google ($100K initial investment) and Intuit ($225K initial investment). And we’ve all heard of the evenmore numerous acquisition successes such as YouTube (acquired by Google for $1.65 billion only 18 months after its launch), PayPal (acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion) and MySpace by News Corporation for $580 million) to name but a few.

But the key to private company investing is that for every one of these big name firms that is covered by the mainstream and business press, there are hundreds of smaller firms which make their early investors millions.

Some of these firms include:

• About.com : acquired for$410 million by the New York Times

• Advertising.com : acquired for $435 million by AOL Time Warner

• Affinity Labs: acquired for $61 million by Monster Worldwide

• AllBusiness.com : acquired for $55 million by Dun & Bradstreet

• Aruba Networks: IPO at a $1 billion valuation

• Club Penguin: acquired for $350 million cash (and possible $350 million earnout) by Disney

• FraudSciences acquired for $169 million by PayPal

• Glu Mobile: IPO at a $371 million valuation

• Last.fm: acquired for $280 million by CBS

• Mellanox Technologies: IPO at a $579 million valuation

• Orbital Data Corp.: acquired for $50 million by Citrix Systems

• Overture: acquired for $1.63 billion by Yahoo!

• Photobucket: acquired for $300 million by Fox Interactive Media

• Speedera Networks: acquired for $130 million by Akamai

• Skype: acquired for $2.6 billion by eBay

• The Generations Network: acquired for $300 million by Spectrum Equity Investors

Because the average valuation for the first investment in a private company is

approximately $2.5 million, early investors/founders in these firms may have earned 20 to 1,000 TIMES their investment.

We hope and trust that the secrets of Private Equity investing, drawn from our experience of advising and investing in literally thousands of entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized pre-public companies over the past nine years, will provide you the insight you need to truly prosper in today’s turbulent, but incredibly opportunity-filled, markets. Apr 10, 09    The Violinist
Category: Blog |

The Violinist

A man sat at a subway station in Washington DC and started to play the violin. It was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: A woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes after that, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for something.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tugged him along but the kid stopped to look at the violinist and listen anyway. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time to look back. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while.. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

Violinists in the world.. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written… with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the ticket prices averaged $100 each.

Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the subway, was organized by the
Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities. The outlines were this:

In a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour, do we even perceive beauty?

Do we stop to appreciate it?

Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experiment could be this:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best classical musicians in the world, playing music from one of the greatest composers who ever lived, how many other things are we missing?

Mar 14, 09    Better Than Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway
Category: Blog |

Hello David here…When you purchase Shares in Flow-Time Ltd the funds are invested into Dominion NX2 funds, which are essentially insurance funds. Dominion has established valuable relationships with globally recognised institutions such as Norwich Union and Prudential that provide underlying assets for the fund and insurances. Also their investment portfolios are organised, they are sure and people can trust in them.

Warren Buffet’s secret is that his company Berkshire Hathaway mainly is invested in insurance companies, so is Flow-Time through the Dominion funds. Berkshire Hathaway’s core business insurance, including property and casualty insurance, reinsurance and and specialty nonstandard insurance. The company averaged an annual growth in book value of 20.3% to its shareholders for the last 44 years, while employing large amounts of capital and minimal debt.

Last year, the worst year since 1929, Berkshire Hathaway has lost 37.5% and Dominion’s NX2 did far less bad or far better as you may see on the pdf file I’ve attached. NX2-Euro Key Facts (March 2009)

Sep 19, 08    Thanks for the music Bheki, rest in peace
Category: News |

Last Monday, September 8th 2008 Bheki Mseleku died at his home in South London. He was 53. He had suffered from diabetes. Many of you came to The Loft concert on April 8th 2006 where Bheki played a beautiful solo concert at the piano. The concert at The Loft brought many people together to honour and enjoy the music making of this extraordinary musician. I wanted to let you know as soon as I could that you can join a memorial concert this Friday at South Africa House, Trafalgar Square, from 6pm – 9pm. As this is sent to you I do not know booking details, but from what I’ve heard you can just turn up. It will be the beginning of the formation of a Trust Fund set up in his memory, which will aid his family as well as a bursary for a young musician. The Arts and Culture Minister of South Africa Pallo Jordon called Bheki “a supremely talented creative visionary”. Rest in Peace, Bheki….

please take a look at Bheki’s myspace site:

Sep 04, 08    `Flow-Time gets newsletter going!´
Category: News |

This is really good news and is going to be exciting…`Flow-Time gets newsletter going!´ …Keeping you up to date with events and concerts from David Jean-Baptiste performance groups, cds and products, special offers, reviews and previews, keep informed about Clarinet Therapy and Music and Memory as they grow, special guest interviews, related topics and of course free stuff. `Reflections´ is a gift to you for subscribing, best played when you want to unwind after a long and tiring day or when a person needs to relax and get centred before an important task. Enjoy…

To subscribe visit www.davidjeanbaptiste.com where on submitting your name and email address you will receive a link to the `Flow-Time´ newsletter and also a free download link for `Reflections´an incredibly powerful and unique relaxation cd from David Jean-Baptiste and Danish pianist, sound designer Nicky Bendix…

We appreciate that you trust us with your email address. You can rest assured that it is safe and will not be forwarded on, rented or sold to a third party.

“I come home, sit back, turn on Reflections and the days stress simply drains away every time, I don’t know how it works but it works”… (antje boetius, marine biologist)

“Unlike the masses of synthesizer based relaxation music on the market Reflections has been recorded by instrumentalists totally at ease with creating music for this situation”…(Arne Weiss, sound designer)

”It calmed my energetic kids before bedtime”… (lucie polya, education inspector)

Reflections… Eight pieces of music performed by David playing variations on an infectiously relaxing D flat pedal on Contra-bass Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Bass Flute with the piano and spacy keyboards of Nicky Bendix . Nicky has an open channel to the heavens, you will not hear him repeat a phrase throughout…Reflections works by gradually slowing down the rhythm of the body and mind in time with the music, which is often very slow, minimal and introspective. The monotone is sweet on the low clarinets and the bass flute.  The spacy and imaginative sound design from Nicky Bendix has a Nordic touch. Here our mind stays attentive as it normally does when listening to music, as it is interesting; but because the music really doesn’t go anywhere and stays in the same tonality eventually the mind gives in and totally relaxes…

With regular use you can really begin to enjoy these benefits often…

  • Reduces stress
  • Eases the mind
  • Creates a relaxed space
  • Promotes better sleep
  • Releases endorphins
  • Improves concentration
  • Heightened creativity
  • Aligns the physical body and mind
  • Unlocks the dream machine
  • Helps find your flow-centre
  • Works as a personal development too

“I wanted to create a work with the primary intention to relax the listener using music, the best combination of musical instruments and the most suitable performing artists for the task. I could not have asked a pianist keyboardist better suited for this project than Nicky Bendix. He is fresh, creative and deeply introspective… we created something that turns off your thinking mind freeing you to simply relax and dream…”

Background to sound healing: by Jason Rowe

The universe at its basest level is made up of sound vibrations. And whether something is as large as a galaxy of as small as one human being the same is true. How often do we meet somebody and there is no effort to relate with them? Resonance at similar frequency happens all the time to all living matter and this is often referred to as entrainment, (and of course the opposite can also be true.) Her mother’s heartbeat is the first sound a baby hears inside the womb. It nurtures and supports her growth and lays the foundation for trust within the human form. As adults, sound is the last sense we leave behind. Rhythm and music is as fundamental a part of all human communities, whenever and wherever they are, as is water, food and sunlight. For thousands of year’s music was family, along with dance and storytelling. Today’s modern technology platforms and entertainment business models has reversed this and put ownership with a few record labels and performers thus making the majority of the western world passive in response to music.

However many artists have realized the healing potential of sound and some have even produced music that seeks to heal the listener by raising the level of consciousness and thus bringing about self discovery and therefore the possibility of healing and change. Many of these are now using common software and the Internet to deliver this message to a wider audience. Pythagoras is seen as the pioneer of sound healing c.500 BC, and the ancient Indian Vedic Chakra system of energy centres within the body is now widely recognized within the West. The core system revolves around 7 chakras from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. (1. Base 2. Sacral 3. Solar Plexus 4. Heart 5. Throat 6. Third Eye 7. Crown.). These centres are guides to convergent areas that cover physical, emotional and spiritual energies. Sound that creates healing resonates at these areas and levels.
